What is the difference between optical and digital zoom?

Optical zoom - when the hardware technology is used to zoom into the area you are trying to capture. It also helps capture more light so the actual picture will be less blurry.
Digital zoom - when you zoom into the picture once it's taken however this may become blurry.
Megapixel - a pixel is a tiny dot that makes up an image and a megapixel is a million pixels.
The number of pixels doesn't mean a picture will necessarily be better quality. If a camera gathers more light you will see it better and the picture will be better quality but the pixels just ensure that the image can be blown up without it becoming blurry.

What is resolution? What is it measured in?

The resolution is the number of pixels in the picture. The more pixels in an image the higher the resolution. For example in a YouTube video 144p would be the lowest quality and 1080p would be the best quality.

Metadata

Metadata is used in cameras to give certain information such as:
  • Means of creation of the data
  • Purpose of the data
  • Time and date of creation
  • Creator or author of the data
  • Location on a computer network where the data were created
  • Standards used

GPS tagging

Adding the geographical coordinates to the photo's metadata to tell where the picture was taken.

What do cameras use wi-fi for?

If a camera has wi-fi then any images can be uploaded immeadiately to online albums.

The HTC1 is classed as one of the best mobile phone cameras on the market, not because of the number of pixels as would be assumed, but because it has an ultrapixel camera. This means that the optical lens captures more light than most 8 or 13 megapixel cameras.

“We shouldn't scrap pixel count entirely when weighing smartphone cameras, but in terms of the hardware and software details that actually go into making a great photo, megapixels are highly overrated. It's high time we focus on other areas that count more, like that undersung sensor.
